Instead of a controlled, electric kiln, the raku technique requires a fuel-burning kiln due to its quick and high heating qualities. Pulled from the kiln red-hot, this piece was then quickly placed in combustible materials which bursted into flames upon contact. It was then smothered with a container to deprive the set up of oxygen, and immediately cooled down.
Through the process of using fire, quick temperature changes, and oxygen deprivation, the raku process results in endless variations in colors and surface effects. Results can never be repeated; each piece is truly an original.
